Debating

No matter what level of debate you want, we have something for you – come listen to our Public Debate on a Tuesday evening (19:00, LN/002), improve your public speaking in our novices class on a Wednesday afternoon, or join our teams competing most weekends at universities across the UK.

Like the majority of other debating societies in the UK, we use the British Parliamentary style of debate. Debates consist of 8 speakers, with two teams of two people on each of the Proposition (or government) and the Opposition. Each person has 5 minutes to make their speech, with the middle 3 minutes ‘unprotected time’ where any member of the opposing side can stand up to make a point of information against them.
