Classes
Whether you just want to improve your confidence speaking in public, or want to compete on the international circuit, we offer something for you!
We run weekly classes on Wednesday afternoons, check the weekly e-mail for the time and place. To subscribe to the weekly e-mail, just drop us an e-mail at debating@yusu.org
If you’ve debated before or not, just turn up to any class to see if it’s for you – we’re always very pleased to see new faces!
If you want any more information about classes, what happens in them, or which class to attend, please email the Debating Officer at debating@yusu.org.
Training Resources:
At the beginning of most classes, we give handouts about what the session will be about, and a reminder for you to take home!
These are a great debating resource if you have never been before, or want to recap on sessions you’ve been to:
Debateland vs Reality: this sessions covers the very fundamentals of debating, and the key differences between winning an argument in public and in a competitve debate.
Preparing a Debate: A superb introduction to preparation and note-taking in anticipation of a debate. This is great advice for people starting out on the IV circuit, or just want to get better at debating.
Refutation and Rebuttal: Mastering these two abilities can often be the difference between winning or losing a debate. This session covers how to analyse, pick apart, and take down an opponent’s argument. A great lesson on improving and enhancing your debating.
Points of Information: Points of information are a crucial part of a good debate. They involve timing, skill, and quick-wit. This will tell you everything you know about how to stop another opponent’s argument in its tracks.
All guides were put together by our brilliant training secretary Nathan Paulson.
