The York Union Debating Society offers unique access to York’s student population, as well as to students within the debating network across the country, and beyond.

Within the York campus, not only do we have a large, committed, membership base, ranging across academic disciplines, both undergraduate and postgraduate, but we also welcome significant audience turnouts to both our weekly Public Debates, and to our Speaker events. We often work with other student societies, political and non-political, to host debates on particular topics of interest, increasing again the access to the student body at York.

Outside of York itself, we send teams most weekends to compete at universities across the UK, including Oxford, Cambridge and Durham – starting the 2008/9 season in

style in October by reaching the final of the Princess Alexandra Cup hosted by Lancaster University. We also have a presence on the international circuit – within the UK and further afield – competing in summer 2008 at the Euros Debating Championship in Tallinn, Estonia, and in December 2008 at the World Universities Debating Championship in Cork, Ireland.

The Society is always open to opportunities to work with sponsors, from publicity at a one-off event to a long-term partnership. Some possible opportunities may be the sponsoring of a Speaker event, a social, merchandise sponsorship, sponsorship for the Society as a whole, and sponsorship for the York IV.

The 2009 York Intervarsity Competition is kindly sponsored by Accenture; sponsorship for the York IV 2010 is currently open to negotiation.
